Artist Statement

 I am a Nicaraguan Ceramic Artist, born and raised in San Francisco,Yo Tengo Orgullo de ser Nicaragüense. (I am proud to be Nicaragüense.) I have a deep connection with my Nicaraguan culture. The knowledge that I have acquired through education to educate others . I am inspired by my culture, things I've learned throughout my college journey, personal experiences,my Love for animals, nature, ecosystems, music, dance and art.What has influenced how I depict things in drawings is through being exposed at a young age to go to art galleries and going to see Egyptian art .I was always intrigued and inspired by the way that they depicted their gods, but that wasn't the only thing that influenced my work as a child I watched a show called Arthur on PBS ,These two influences really encapsulate my style in which I like to capture people.I have always been surrounded by animals and nature throughout my life and have had them since I was 1 years old. These elements are highlighted throughout my work and increasingly became my focus. I Use Animals as a vessel to express those experiences.I have been able to experience my culture in the motherland every time we go Nicaragua, I would spend time with my family. Our home town is called Jinotega. It's in the rainforest in a valley .I always remember my mother and family Telling me the stories of my great grandma who was half Chorotega Indígena a strong independent woman.In my work, I incorporate symbols and images from my Nicaraguan culture and utilize things I have learned in my latino studies courses. As a student with a learning disability called dyslexia, I struggle with reading , writing , short memory, unreadable handwriting ,auditory discrimination , but also balance and coordination. As a result it's difficult for me Learn how to move .learning to dance and do movmemt in exersise have been crucial in helping me succeed academically .I incorporate physical movements in my work because these moment that give joy and nostalgia .Every time I think back to these moment , I become inspired and I want to recreate these moments through ceramic sculpture.
